About Dr. James A. Grifo

Dr. James A. Grifo is an Infertility Specialist and Reproductive Endocrinologist in New York. He earned a PhD in 1982 and an MD in 1984 both from Case Western Reserve Medical School. He also completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology in 1990 from Yale University School of Medicine. He provides treatments including Artificial insemination, Fertility preservation, Preimplantation diagnosis, and In vitro fertilization.

Dr. Grifo served as a Former Resident in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Cornell University Medical Center in 1988. He is a Program Director at New York University (NYU) Langone Fertility Center and an Infertility Specialist, Director, Professor, and Reproductive Endocrinologist at NYU School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).

Dr. James has received many honors during his career, including the President’s Award from RESOLVE and the SART prize for research. He has been featured extensively in top-tier national media, including Vogue, The New York Times, TODAY Show, CNN, MSNBC, The New Yorker, Scientific American, and Wired, among others. His book, The Whole Life Fertility Plan, co-written with Kyra Phillips, was published in 2015.

1. Dr. Grifovhave pioneered techniques called preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and preimplantation genetic screening (PGS), which examine specific genes and chromosomal numbers in early embryo development.

2. In 1992, he performed the first embryo biopsy that resulted in a live birth in the United States.

3. Dr. Grifo’s research team produced the NYU Vitrification Method, which has been in use at the Center since 2004. The first baby born through the use of egg freezing at the Center was in July 2005.
